Immigrants' assimilation

Dear Editor:Thank you for you and your family's service to our country, Mr. Mathews ("Serving Our Country," Letters to the Editor, 6/13/13). Being a retired serviceman and my son six years away from his military retirement, my cousin in the infantry in Afghanistan right now, service to our country is very important. However, the only individuals allowed to join the military are American citizens and legal residents with a green card. Illegal aliens are not allowed to join the military. I guess he didn't understand my satire regarding French. I was referring to George Washington's participation in the French and Indian War. Regarding ballot information being printed in foreign languages, to become a citizen one must take a test in English and it's only the people in Congress pandering to different groups in order to get their vote to stay in power. We have always been a country that wanted people to come here and assimilate, not like now where everyone is dividing themselves into different groups in order to leverage power. I never stated that drug use was a victimless crime. Users and sellers should all go to jail. However, many liberals and do-gooders believe drug use is a disease and not a crime. His statement that compares gun-makers and dealers to criminals is patently false. George Hofstetter Downey
