SPORTS BRIEFS: Lacrosse, running camps start Monday

DOWNEY - The Downey High School girls' lacrosse program will be starting their summer practice schedule on Monday.Girls' lacrosse will practice Monday, July 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th. There will be no practice on Thursday, July 4th, in honor of the Independence Day holiday. Practices will then resume July 15-19, July 22-26 and July 29 through Aug. 2. Coach Mires hopes to see new talent on the field Monday, July 29. * The Downey High School girls' soccer program will be hosting a summer camp for girls ages 9-13 on the soccer field at Downey High. The cost of the camp is $100 if registered before July 26, and $125 thereafter. Soccer camp will run July 29 through Aug. 2 from 10 a.m. to noon. Athletes are asked to provide sunscreen, plenty of water, cleats, shin guards and a ball. Space is limited to the first 40 girls who register. Coach Lara and his staff hope to see you on the pitch July 29 at 10 a.m. * The Downey High School girls' volleyball program will be starting their summer program in the Downey High gymnasium on July 11, and will run through July 25. Summer camp sessions start at 9 a.m. Camp registration will be Wednesday, July 3, at 10 a.m. in room Z-5. Tryouts for incoming freshmen will be held July 25th, from 9 a.m. to noon. Coach Sims hopes to see you on the court July 11. * The 2013 C.I.F. champion Bear soccer program will be having a summer league and a summer camp. All potential players must go through the trial process of summer league, which will give the coaches a better look at the individual player through practices and competitive matches (10+ games). Summer league will take place during the month of July. Once the coaching staff has established potential teams (Frosh-Soph, J.V. and Varsity), the staff will begin in-depth training during the month of August. Both summer league and summer camp are essential in order to compete for a spot on the team. Coach Pena expects that potential players attend a minimum of 80% of practices and games, show up on time with proper gear and attire, come fit (or you will already be behind), work hard and have positive and respectful attitudes at all times. Coach Pena is striving to put together championship winning teams, while also building and molding championship characters. The cost is $130 (covers both July and August league fees). Coach Pena and his staff hope to see you on the pitch in July ready to play. * The Warren High School baseball program will be hosting a summer camp July 8-11, and a second week July 15-18, on the baseball field at Warren High. Both week's camp times are from 9:30 a.m until noon. All baseball players ages K-9 are welcome to attend the Warren Baseball Camp. Coach Pearson encourages young athletes to come and improve their baseball skills and knowledge from the coaches and staff of Warren Bears Baseball (including former college and professional baseball players). Coach Pearson and his staff will be working on hitting, fielding, pitching and base running. This is a great opportunity for incoming freshmen to meet the High School coaches and get a head start on honing their skills for upcoming tryouts in September. The cost is $145 for K-7 and $165 for incoming freshmen. The fee includes a camp T-shirt and training. Coach Pearson and his staff hope to see you at the Warren baseball field on Monday, July 8, at 9:30 a.m. * The Warren High School girls' cross country program will begin their annual summer running camp Monday on the track at Warren High. The camp runs through July 12 with no camp on July 4. Camp willl last from 7-11 a.m. on all other days. Warren girls' cross country is looking for dedicated young ladies who want to do something different. Warren has a unique fitness camp that hosts a variety of fitness activities. Two-hundred girls joined Warren girls' cross country last year because they wanted to try something new. Girls got into shape and had fun along the way. The Warren summer running camp povides a foundation for any sport. Some campers even decided to join the cross country team. Today, some of them are the best in the west, like Lali Avila (Cal State Long Beach) who can run the mile in 5:06. Coach Waldron and his staff invite you to come get fit and stay healthy. Diet and nutrition, guest speakers, conditioning, getting into shape, meeting new friends, setting goals, having fun, wellness and life skills are just a few of the many positives about getting involved. Coach Waldron and his staff hope to see you at the track Monday at 7 a.m. * The Long Beach Press-Telegram has released it's annual Dream Team selections for girls' swimming and girls' track and field. Downey senior Meghan Nevarez and Downey Calvary Chapel senior Rosalee Santa Ana were both selected to the second team dream team. Warren senior Valerie Orozco was recognized with honorable mention. All three girls proudly represented their respective schools in the 2013 swim season. Downey girls' track had one member selected to the Dream Team's first team and another member selected to the second team. Lisa Vasquez and Kristin Johnson earned these honors, respectively. Vasquez, only a sophomore, ran the 1600 in 4:59.03 and the 3200 in 10:51.78. Vasquez was the San Gabriel Valley League champion in both distances. Vasquez also placed sixth at the C.I.F. Southern Section Division I finals. Lisa Vasquez was also the S.G.V.L. champion in cross country last fall. For her efforts, Vasquez was selected to the first team Dream Team. Senior Kristin Johnson had the area's best triple jump this year with a distance of 37'6. Johnson placed fifth at the C.I.F. Southern Section Division I finals. For her efforts, Johnson was selected to the second team Dream Team.
