Summer events at Downey space center

DOWNEY - The Columbia Memorial Space Center has lined up several programs and events for the summer, beginning with summer space camp that started Monday and runs through Aug. 2.The camp is for ages 10-13 and teaches kids about flight, rocketry and robotics. Cost is $150 ($135 for space center members) per week. Meanwhile, on July 20, the space center hosts a "Rocket Fever" event where guests can learn all about rockets. Participants will hear from a rocket expert before learning how to build and fly their own rocket. Admission to Rocket Fever is $5. The space center also offers weekly tours of the space shuttle mock-up. Tours are given Saturdays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and are free with paid admission. On Aug. 24, "Roving Rovers Rove" will be the subject of the space center's "Saturday Science" program. Space center staff will explain rovers, their purpose and history, and how they help us learn about their explorations. The space center also plans to host preschool classes every Saturday in August for kids ages 3-5. Classes are from 10-11 a.m., cost $12 per session, and guardian participation is required.
