Warren High unveils Distinguished School plaque

DOWNEY - Warren High School unveiled a new plaque June 5 that recognizes the campus for being named a California Distinguished School.Warren High was recognized by the state for having "exemplary programs" in Arts Education, Career Technical Education, and Physical Activity and Nutrition. Warren High was the only high school in California to receive Distinguished School honors in all three categories. The celebration opened with performances by Warren High's jazz band as district and community dignitaries, students and staff members arrived and were seated. Principal John Harris welcomed the audience and invited all to stay after the ceremony for refreshments prepared by the school's Culinary Arts students. Superintendent Dr. John Garcia introduced the school board members in attendance as well as retired superintendent Dr. Wendy Doty. School board president Donald LaPlante shared a brief history of Downey and the significant role the city played in our nation's aerospace and engineering advancements. LaPlante also detailed the rigorous process that "Distinguished School" candidate schools must endure to be considered for the honor. Officials with the state's Department of Education made personal visits to Warren High in early spring before bestowing the recognition. After his comments, school board members and district officials pulled the drape off the new plaque, which is installed on the north wall of the administration building. The program concluded with music from the Warren High Vocal Jazz Ensemble and refreshments.
