Giulio Mirabella turns 100

DOWNEY - Giulio Mirabella, who moved here from New York in 1963 and found employment with North American Aviation where he installed windows for the Apollo capsules, celebrated his 100th birthday last Feb. 8 at Whittier's Dattilo Italian Restaurant. Toasting Giulio's longevity and joy of life were members of his family, some of whom (including his brother Frank) flew all the way from Melbourne, Australia, as well as from Tennessee, while others travelled from Northern and Central California.

Scores of his friends shared in the celebration, which even included congratulatory messages from President and Mrs. Obama, and Governor Jerry Brown.

Daughter Jo (Art) Ochoa said even though Giulio still walked with steady legs and his sight, speech and general health were still unimpaired, he chose not to renew his driver's license, which expired on his actual birthday, Feb. 6.

His secret to longevity? "Eating healthy, exercise, a loving family, lots of friends, and an optimistic outlook on life."
