Silent auction at Downey library
DOWNEY - Silent auction items to benefit the Downey City Library are now on display in the library lobby.Items include: "The Friendly Dickens" (the life and times of Charles Dickens); "With a Little Help from My Friends and The Beatles - Recording Sessions" (an early look at the Beatles by George Martin, who produced all their records); "Crusades and the Crusaders" (the history, myth and romance of the knights and the crusades); "Basketball 1963, Sports March 1961, Sports February 1970, Sports March 1970" (read about the greats in sports at that time in these four magazines); "Ronald Reagan - An American Hero" (his trials, triumphs, character, vision and values); "Wildflowers of California" (a pictoral and interpretive exploration of the astonishing spectrum of flowers in bloom across the Golden State); "Uncle Tom's Cabin" (Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel has earned a place in both literary and American history); "Mirage" (another thriller by Clive Cussler, the grand master of adventure); "Wonders of the African World" (Henry Louis Gates Jr. takes us to the heart of Africa's long and colorful history); "Just Here for More Food" (respected baker Alton Brown tells his secrets for getting great results in the kitchen); "Lighthouses" (lots of history and pictures on one of America's classic symbols). Items have opening bids from $6-$10. Bids can be made until noon on Feb. 22 in the Friends Bookstore located in the young adult section of the library. Proceeds are used to support library programs.
