Police launches ‘Operation Save Our Seats’

DOWNEY – The Downey Police Department is launching “Operation Save Our Seats,” an effort to reduce the number of third-row seats stolen from sport utility vehicles. On May 17, police officers are offering to etch license plate numbers onto the frame of the third-row seat.

Etchings increase the likelihood that the seat can be returned to its rightful owner “and hopefully hold those accountable for committing the thefts,” authorities said.

“Operation Save Our Seats” specifically targets newer model Chevy Tahoes, GMC Yukons and Cadillac Escalades, however, all vehicles with removable third-row seats can request an etching.

Etchings are done free of charge and take about 15-20 minutes to complete. The operation will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the police department’s west parking lot.

Reservations are requested by calling Detective Lockwood at (562) 904-2332 or email tlockwood@downeyca.org.
