Sports Briefs: Still time to enroll in summer camps

DOWNEY – The Downey High School football program will be hosting two summer camps on Sunday in July. The first camp will be this Sunday, July 13, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost is $25.

The second camp will be Sunday, July 27, also from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Cost is also $25.

Viking Skills Camp will feature an introduction to tackling techniques, defensive drills, speed training and offensive drills. Camp will be open for student-athletes ages 6-14. Similar to previous years, USC players will be in attendance. Former Downey Viking standout and current Trojan Jabari Ruffin, former Trojan and current St. Louis Ram safety T.J. McDonald and current Trojan offensive lineman Zach Banner have all attended the Viking Skills Camp in recent years.

Coach Williams will also educate parents on what is expected of athletes to be able to play football at the high school and collegiate levels, school expectations and student- athlete character. The Downey High School cheer program conducted cheer tryouts May 16 for incoming cheerleaders. Downey cheer started their summer practice sessions Monday, June 23, and have sessions scheduled throughout the summer.

Practices continued this week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. and will also be next Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the same hours.

The AMP Summer Camp will be held July 21-23 and cheer will then take their summer break following that. Cheer practices will resume Monday, August 18, through Friday, August 22, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and will conclude the week of August 25 through August 29 during the same hours.

The Downey High School dance team conducted dance tryouts June 6th for their incoming dance team members. Downey dance started their summer practices this week from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Practices continue next Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The AMP Summer Camp will be held July 21-23 and dance will also take their summer break following that. Dance practices resume Monday, August 18, through Friday, August 22, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Practices conclude Monday, August 25, through Friday, August 29, during the same hours.

Head football coach Raul Lara and the Warren High School football program have been working hard this spring and summer preparing for the fall season.

Summer practices started June 23, and will conclude Tuesday, July 22. The Bears have been practicing from 2- 5 p.m. on the field and in the weight room at Justice Stadium.

The Bears will take their C.I.F. mandated “dead period” from July 23 until August 13. Coach Lara and the Bears are hoping to improve upon an 0-10 season from 2013.

Head wrestling coach Tim Brogden and the Warren High School wrestling program started their summer workouts June 23, and will continue through Thursday, July, 31. Practice sessions are from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost is $20 and is open for student-athletes ages 12-18.

Practices are held upstairs at Justice Stadium in the wrestling room (203). Practices include conditioning, weight lifting and wrestling. Wrestlers need to bring wrestling shoes, shorts and running shoes to workouts.

The Warren High School girls’ soccer program has had a busy summer and they are only three weeks into their summer.

The Lady Bears’ soccer team took first place at the Santa Fe High School Summer League Tournament last week. New head coach Liliana Salazar is excited about this year’s team and the Warren High School girls’ program.

The Warren girls’ soccer program will complete their summer camp later today. Girls competed in games on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Bellflower Tournament.

Girls’ cross country is getting into their summer program. Head coach Jay Waldron is finishing his W.O.N. Fitness Camp for girls today and is moving into his summer workouts.
