Cerritos Library releases November schedule

CERRITOS - The Cerritos Library has several events and promotions lined up for the month of November, many targeted at kids and teens. Below is a partial schedule of events:Arts & Crafts for Kids (ages 2-12) - Children are invited to participate in a free hands-on craft featuring a Thanksgiving theme. These "glue and go" crafts take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Friday, Nov. 1, 10 a.m. & 5 p.m. Art Innovators (ages 6-12) - Create your own masterpiece for Thanksgiving. $5 per child. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 3:30 Create Your Own Business (ages 15-18) - Have a great idea? In this two-hour hands-on seminar, teens will learn some of the basic concepts of becoming an entrepreneur, including business planning, financial projections and marketing. Students will have an opportunity to prepare and pitch their own idea. The workshop is presented in cooperation with the Small Business Development Center of Long Beach and is limited to 15 participants. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 4 p.m. Blood drive (ages 17 and up) - Due to a critically low local blood supply and severe shortages of blood collections across the nation, Cerritos and the American Red Cross will hold a blood drive. All blood donors receive two VIP tickets to the Laugh Factory. Any healthy person age 17 and older and weighing at least 100 pounds may donate. Thursday, Nov. 7, 12 p.m. Basic Finances for Teens (ages 15-18) - Teens are invited to discover the fundamentals of financial management. This one-hour overview presented by Heartland Institute of Financial Education will present information on basic financial concepts, how money works, budgeting and managing debt. Thursday, Nov. 7, 4 p.m. Getting Accepted into College (all ages) - This one-hour workshop presented by Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions is designed to show students and parents what college admissions officers expect from applicants' high school experiences. Topics covered include the top factors in college admissions decisions, the role of social media and the importance of the SAT and ACT. Thursday, Nov. 7, 7 p.m. Fine Tune Your College Essay (ages 16-19) - This workshop will provide students with an opportunity to improve their college application essays and maximize their impact. Tuesday, Nov. 12, 4 p.m. Lava Lamp (ages 8-12) - In the first workshop of the Art in Science Workshop, kids will make a groovy lava lamp using oil and water. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 3:30 p.m. Aquarium (all ages) - Learn about the fish in the library's aquarium. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 3:30 p.m. Family night (all ages) - "Fantastick Patrick" is a world-class entertainer whose unique blend of circus skills and comedic timing have led to appearances on "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien", "Hell's Kitchen" and the MTV movie awards. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 7 p.m. Creative Writing for Kids (ages 7-12) - Children will learn about various aspects of story writing. Wednesdays, Nov. 13 and 20, 3:30 p.m. College Planning (all ages) - The Heartland Institute of financial Education will present an informational lecture for parents and students on college planning. Topics to be discussed include college funding strategies, financial aid, GPA enhancement, scholarships and grants. Thursday, Nov. 14, 7 p.m. Research Tools for Teens (ages 15-18) - Teens will be introduced to a variety of research tools, including print and electronic resources that are useful for completing projects and papers. Monday, Nov. 18, 4 p.m. Meet Author Lee Gale Gruen (all ages) - Author Lee Gale Gruen will discuss her memoir, "Adventures with Dad: A Father and Daughter's Journey through a Senior Acting Class." This is a heartwarming story of the love and bond that grew between a father and daughter, both in their later life, as they attended an acting class for seniors. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Monday, Nov. 18, 7 p.m. Dave Boatman's Cartoon Class (ages 7-12) - This class will provide an educational, creative and interactive hour of cartoon instruction. Dave Boatman will teach how cartoons are used in our society, present warm-up and imagination exercises, provide drawing tips and demonstrate how to draw various cartoon facial expressions. This class is meant to inspire and motivate students in their love of cartoons and drawing. Tuesday, Nov. 19, 3:30 p.m. Writing Lab Reports (ages 13-18) - Students will learn how to write better lab reports for science courses. Topics discussed will include the scientific method, inductive and deductive reasoning, and how to format and graph experimental data. Tuesday, Nov. 19, 4 p.m. Book Club for Adults (ages 18 and up) - The Book Club for Adults will meet for coffee and a discussion of the book, "Buddha in the Attic" by Julie Otsuka. Wednesday, Nov. 20, 10 a.m. Beginning Origami for Kids (ages 6-12) - Volunteer Alexa Marie Flores will teach basic origami folding for children and demonstrate how to fold a bird during this hour-long class. Tuesday, Nov. 26, 3:30 p.m. Meanwhile, several brush paintings and banners by James Kim will be displayed in the library lobby through November. Kim's work has been recognized at many international calligraphy and art exhibitions. As part of the ongoing exhibits planned to showcase the unique pieces from the library's special collection of artists' books, a variety of these books will be displayed through the library until the end of December. The exhibit includes portfolio, pop-up, scroll and tunnel books, and several special books that use metal, glass and other unusual materials.
