Lynwood students are winners at film festival

LYNWOOD - A group of Lynwood High School filmmakers were recently recognized with an Outstanding Achievement by Youth Filmmakers award after debuting their very first film at the East Los Angeles Film Festival 2013, produced by The East Los Angeles Society of Film & Arts (TELASOFA).The short film titled "Our First Movie" was shot in Lynwood and developed as part of the Tribeca Teaches Film Program at Lynwood High School in partnership with Southern California Crossroads and St. Francis Medical Center. "Our film was about breaking stereotypes," said LHS student Helen Iñiguez. "Two young aspiring filmmakers with different opinions on their hometown make an unlikely pair and realize they're not so different after all." The following LHS students participated in filming: Saul García, Fernando Lopez, Christopher Contreras, Jorge Liscano, Hugo Franco, Jose J. Rodriguez, Anthony Montero, Adriana Vasquez, Alan Ventura and Iñiguez. "It makes me proud to see our students taking part in such a great program that will no doubt open the door to more opportunities in the future," said LUSD Board of Education President Maria G. Lopez. "Congratulations to our young filmmakers for their achievements." During the five-month Tribeca Teaches program, the Lynwood High students met twice a week at St. Francis Medical Center, where they were engaged through advanced film curriculum taught by a resident teacher and professional filmmaker. The students had the opportunity to work with medical staff to raise awareness about issues in the Lynwood community while also gaining invaluable experience in the world of film. "Part of our Achieving Greatness Strategic plan includes providing quality programs that offer our students hands-on experience in a variety of career fields," said LUSD Superintendent Paul Gothold. "This meaningful partnership is allowing us to do just that." To view the film, visit tribecafilminstitute.org/films/detail/our_first_movie.
