Shirley Mark, 93, mourned

DOWNEY - Local community leader Shirley Mark passed away Sept. 5 at age 93 after battling Alzheimer's disease.She was born Sept. 2, 1920 in New York City and graduated from high school with honors at 16. When she was young, Shirley traveled through Europe and other countries, often by herself. She worked for Revlon Company for many years and moved to Los Angeles in 1957, about the same time as her beloved Dodgers. She was an active volunteer in the general and Jewish communities, serving as president of the Downey chapter and Southwest Council of B'nai B'rith Women. She was also an active member of Temple Ner Tamid. Shirley was active with Friends of the Downey Library and was honored as the longest volunteer (22 years) at Lakewood Park Health Center. Shirley returned to college later in life and graduated from Cal State Long Beach at age 64, where she wrote for the school paper. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Harold Mark; children and close family, Mindy Friedman, Adrienne Yukawa, Alan Mark and Judy Mark (Allen Erenbaum); and grandchildren, Ilana, Tami, Brittany, Brandon, Joshua, Jeremy and Emma. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Mount Sinai Hollywood Hills. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Los Angeles, the Autism Society of Los Angeles or the Friends of the Downey Library.
