Sports briefs: Results from Downey-Warren clashes
DOWNEY - The Downey High School girls' cross country team finished in second place at the second San Gabriel Valley League cluster meet held at Wilderness Park last Thursday.The Lady Vikings also finished in second place at the first S.G.V.L. cluster meet held at Hollydale Park on Sept. 26. Warren defeated Downey 23-34 at Hollydale Park and 25-34 at Wilderness Park. The Warren Lady Bear cross country team is currently ranked 13th in the CIF Division I poll. Downey junior Marissa Pluma finished first with a time of 17:45, junior Brittney Martinez finished fourth with a time of 18:46, senior Stephanie Perea finished sixth at 19:16 Junior Adriana Velasco placed 15th with a time of 20:29, senior Joana Bautista finshed 16th (20:29), freshman Alexandra Gurrola finished 19th (20:50) and sophomore Jacqueline Saldana finished 23rd (21:54). The Lady Vikings finished in a team time of 1:36:45 and an average runner time of 19:21. Warren, the cluster meet winner, finished in a team time of 1:35:39 and an average runner time of 19:07.80. Cross country times are calculated by adding the top five fastest individual times and the average time is calculated by dividing those top five individual times by five. Bear sophomore Janeane Hernandez finished in second place with a time of 18:38, senior Yajaira Zarate finished third (18:43), sophomore Samantha Tabares finished fifth (19:14), senior Elsa Vasquez finished seventh(19:18), junior Valeria Orozco finished 10th (19:46), junior Sadie Encinas finished 12th (19:51) and junior Sofia Ramos finished 13th (19:59). The final cluster meet and S.G.V.L. championships will be held Nov. 6 at La Mirada Regional Park. ** The Downey High School football team defeated cross-town rival Warren 60-0 last Friday night at Justice Stadium. With the win, the Vikings are now 4-3 overall and 2-0 in San Gabriel Valley League play. Warren fell to 0-7 overall and are now 0-2 in S.G.V.L. play. Downey will travel to Gahr tonight to play the Gladiators, who are 3-4 overall and 1-1 in league play. Warren travels to Dominguez tonight to play the 5-2 Dons. The Viking offense was led by junior quarterback Jorge Reyna. Reyna completed 5/11 passes for 128 yards. Reyna accounted for two touchdowns and had one interception. The Downey offense carried the ball 48 times for 541 yards and had eight rushing touchdowns. The Viking rushing game was led by senior running back Eric Carrillo's 13 carries for 107 yards, junior Josh Flores' 11 carries for 97 yards, Reyna's nine carries for 109 yards, junior Remy Harvey's five carries for 62 yards, senior Tristan Esparza's four carries for 55 yards, junior Justin Huff's three carries for 46 yards and junior Jason Thomas' two carries for 62 yards. The Viking passing attack was led by junior Eduardo Preciado's two catches for 56 yards and a touchdown, Esparza's one catch for 38 yards, senior Conor Hill's one catch for 21 yards, senior Edgar Ramirez's one catch for 15 yards, junior Jacob Cook's one catch for 13 yards and junior Chris Blanton's one catch for three yards. Senior kicker Mario Galvan was 4/5 on PAT attempts for four points. The Downey defense was led by Esparza's one solo and nine assisted tackles, junior Manny Ramirez's three solo and five assisted tackles, senior Nick Robles' three solo and three assisted tackles, senior Juwan Pleze's one solo and five assisted tackles, Blanton's four solo and one assisted tackles, Preciado's one solo and three assisted tackles and Cook's four assisted tackles. ** The Warren High School boys' cross country team finished in first place at the second San Gabriel Valley League cluster meet held at Wilderness Park last Thursday. The Bears finished with a team time of 1:17:05 and an average runner time of 15:25. Downey, the cluster meet runner-up, finished with a team time of 1:20:00 and an average runner time of 16:00. Viking sophomore Bryan Pluma finished tenth with a time of 15:45, senior Adrian Munoz finished 11th (15:46), junior Luis Munoz finished 14th (16:04), senior Christian Becerra finished 15th (16:04), sophomore Jary Solis finished 20th (16:21), junior Erick Ayala finished 22th (16:52) and senior Jorge Puga finished 26th (17:28). The final cluster meet and S.G.V.L. championships will be held Nov. 6 at La Mirada Regional Park. ** The Downey Calvary Chapel football team fell to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in Academy League play after a 37-6 defeat against Crean Lutheran last Friday night at Downey High School. With the win, the Crean Lutheran Saints improved to 1-6 overall and 1-0 in league play. DCC was led on offense by junior quarterback Daniel Castro's 4/10 passing for 20 yards. Castro did not throw a touchdown pass but was intercepted once. The Grizzly ground game was led by senior running back Matthew Sanchez's 21 carries for 97 yards, junior Sam Arcalas' five carries for 20 yards, Daniel Castro's five carries for 12 yards, sophomore Brian Holm's three carries for 12 yards and junior Jeremy Hernandez's two carries for 31 yards and a touchdown. The DCC receiving corp was led by Hernandez's two catches for eight yards, Sanchez's one catch for seven yards and junior Joseph Santilan's one catch for five yards. The Grizzly defense was led by Sanchez's eight solo tackles, Holm's five solo tackles, sophomore Byron Smith's four solo tackles, Hernandez's two solo tackles, Castro's two solo tackles, Arcalas' two solo tackles and Santillan's two solo tackles. Other Grizzlies contributing with one tackle each included sophomore Andrew Escandon, senior Jesse Mastron, sophomore Christian Corona and senior Carlos Brito. DCC will have a bye tonight and will play again next Friday night at Sage Hill of Newport Beach. The Sage Hill Lightning will play Brethren Christian tonight in Academy League play. The Lightning are currently 3-4 overall and 0-1 in league play.
