Sports briefs: Vikings score 55 points in win over Millikan

DOWNEY - The Downey High School football team evened their season record at 2-2 with a 51-23 win against PAC-5 Division and Moore League opponent Long Beach Millikan at home last Friday night.With the loss, the Rams fell to 2-2. Downey was led on offense by junior quarterback Jorge Reyna's 11/19 passing for 184 yards and three touchdowns. Reyna also rushed eight times for 97 yards and scored one touchdown. The running backs corp were led by junior Justin Huff's 14 carries for 132 yards and two touchdowns, senior captain Eric Carrillo's six carries for 91 yards and junior Josh Flores' three carries for 67 yards and one touchdown. Senior Tristan Esparza led the Downey receiving corp with three catches for 41 yards, Justin Huff had two catches for 48 yards, junior Jacob Cook had one reception for 39 yards and one touchdown and Eric Carrillo had one reception for 26 yards and one touchdown. Senior kicker Mario Galvan was 6/7 on PAT attempts and was 1/1 on field goal attempts. Galvan connected on a 37 yard field goal. The Viking defense was led by Tristan Esparza's one solo and twelve assisted tackles, senior captain Anthony Florido's two solo and five assisted tackles, senior Nick Robles' one solo and six assisted tackles, junior Eduardo Preciado's two solo and three assisted tackles and junior Manny Ramirez's five assisted tackles. Downey will travel to Huntington Beach this evening to take on an Oiler team that is also 2-2. The Oilers are coming off a 27-17 loss at home to Trabuco Hills. This game represents an intriguing matchup in many ways. Both teams can score. Whichever team can play better defense and slow down the other team's offense will win. Maxpreps currently has Huntington Beach ranked 136th in the state while Downey is ranked 159th. ** The Warren High School football team fell to 0-3 on the season after a 21-14 loss at home last Friday night to Rosemead. With the win, the Panthers improved to 2-1. The Bears will travel to Bell Gardens this evening and face a Lancer team that is 2-1. The Lancers defeated Bell last Friday night, 35-21. Warren kicked the ball off to Rosemead to start the game. The Bear defense started well and held the Panthers to a three and out. The Bears got the ball back at the 10:05 mark of the first quarter but could not sustain a drive. The two teams exchanged the ball and field position for a good part of the first half. Rosemead did score the first touchdown and converted the PAT to take a 7-0 lead. The home crowd got into the game when Warren lined up to punt the ball and faked a punt to the right. The Bears scored on the fake punt but did not convert the PAT. Rosemead led at halftime 7-6. Rosemead kicked the ball off to Warren to start the second half but the Bears could not sustain a drive. Rosemead scored at the 3:04 mark of the third quarter and proceeded to convert the PAT for a 14-6 lead. The last two minutes of the third quarter got interesting after Warren botched a punt and Rosemead recovered at the Bear 20-yard line. As the third quarter drew to a close, Warren intercepted a Rosemead pass at the Bear 15-yard line and regained possession. The third quarter ended with Rosemead leading 14-6. Warren made things interesting at the 8:04 mark of the fourth quarter when the Bears scored a touchdown. The score stood at 14-12 when Coach Jimenez decided to go for the two point conversion and tie the score. Bear quarterback Zaahid Summerville ran a naked bootleg to the left and collided with three Rosemead tacklers at the goaline. Summerville got the ball across the goaline as he was tackled and evened the score at 14. The Bear band and faithful were loud and proud. The tie was short lived, however, as Rosemead marched back down the field and scored a touchdown at the 6:38 mark of the fourth quarter. The PAT attempt was good and the Panthers took the lead back, 21-14. Warren appeared to complete a "go route" at midfield as time was winding down but the ball just eluded the fingertips of stretched-out Bear receiver Dave Escobedo. Rosemead held on for the 21-14 win. ** The Warren High School girls' cross country team has gotten off to a fast start. The Lady Bears participated in the Laguna Hills Invitational on Sept. 14 as well as the Woodbridge Invitational this past Saturday. With their strong finishes in these two events the Lady Bears are now ranked 10th in this week's C.I.F. Division I poll. The C.I.F. Division I top 10 teams are Capistrano Valley followed by Great Oak, Trabuco Hills, San Clemente and Yucaipa. M.L. King is ranked sixth followed by Vista Murrieta, Long Beach Poly, West Ranch and Warren in the tenth spot. Coach Waldron is very pleased with the progress of his team and how hard they have worked to get there. In the Woodbridge Invitational this past weekend, the Lady Bears had two girls run under 18 minutes, six girls run under 19 minutes, 15 girls run under 20 minutes and 25 girls run under 21 minutes for the three mile course. The Lady Bears will now compete at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto. The following girls have earned the right to compete based on their performances: Melissa Agis, Ixy Avila, Elizabeth Diaz, Jessica Egizzi, Sadie Encinas, Andrea Garcia, Trinity Gomez, Krisstel Gomez, Silvia Gonzalez, Janeane Hernandez, Gwendolyn Hurtado, Alexis Jimenez, Valeria Orozco, Nancylee Perez, Victoria Porter, Sofia Ramos, Teresa Ramos, Camila Reyes, Emaly Reyes, Blanca Robles, Anayansi Rodriguez, Elmarose Silva, Samantha Tabares, Elsa Vasquez and Yajaira Zarate. Needless to say, the Lady Bears are excited for this opportunity and are eager to compete. ** Warren High School will be hosting their second annual school carnival this weekend to support Warren athletics and programs. The carnival will be held Friday from 5-11 p.m., Saturday from 1-11 p.m. and Sunday from 1-10 p.m. It will be held in the west parking lot on the corner of De Palma and Paramount Blvd. This year's carnival will take up the entire lot.
