Carnival brings joy to young cancer patients

DOWNEY – A pediatric oncology patient’s day is often filled with doctor’s visits and treatment schedules. But every September, one special event offers children and their families something different: a chance to step away from cancer to have fun and be a kid.

Held in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the annual Kaiser Permanente Downey Pediatric Oncology Carnival transforms an afternoon into a celebration filled with laughter, connection, and unforgettable memories.

Now in its 11th year, the event on September 12 offered young patients facing the challenges of cancer and their families an opportunity to focus on fun while strengthening the bonds that make their care journey possible.

“Events like this remind our patients and families that they are surrounded by a community that cares about them and is by their side,” said Dr. Toska Zomorodian, pediatric oncologist at Kaiser Permanente Downey. “While our work focuses on treating cancer, it’s equally important to create moments of happiness, normalcy and connection. Seeing our patients laughing, playing and spending time with family and friends is incredibly meaningful for all of us.”

Children and their families enjoyed a variety of activities and entertainment throughout the afternoon, including face painting, games and prizes, photo booth, petting zoo, BBQ lunch, and a spirited dance performance by Kaiser Permanente staff. Families also heard inspiring stories from young cancer survivors who shared their journeys of resilience and hope.

“A childhood cancer diagnosis impacts the entire family,” Dr. Zomorodian said. “The carnival gives families an opportunity to connect with one another, celebrate milestones and create joyful memories. Seeing our patients and their loved ones share these special moments is incredibly rewarding for our care team.”

The event concluded with a touching butterfly release honoring patients who have passed away, creating a meaningful moment for everyone to remember and celebrate lives that continue to leave a lasting impact.

This year, dozens of families joined Kaiser Permanente volunteers, physicians and staff at the Kaiser Permanente Downey Annual Pediatric Oncology Carnival for an afternoon of fun, friendship and encouragement.

The event continues to be a cherished tradition, creating lasting memories and reinforcing that patients and families have a community of support beside them during every step of their journey.
