Downey Theatre's future is topic of special meeting (updated)

Update: The meeting has been reduced to a subcommittee meeting, which means no action will be taken and only two council members will participate. Subcommittee members include Mayor Claudia Frometa and Councilman Mario Trujillo.

DOWNEY — The Downey City Council will meet in a special session Tuesday to discuss the Downey Civic Theatre and its future.

According to the posted agenda, the City Council will discuss the theater’s programming and budget, and also its agreement with VenueTech, the San Francisco-based company contracted to manage the theater.

Council members will also hear updates regarding “community theater group programming.“

The City of Downey hired VenueTech to manage theater operations in 2010. The contract has been extended multiple times since then, most recently in 2018.
