Downey Unified selects Roger Brossmer as next superintendent
DOWNEY – The Downey Unified School District Board of Education has announced that Dr. Roger Brossmer has been selected as the district’s next superintendent, pending formal approval at the board’s May 13 meeting.
A veteran educator and familiar face in Downey, Brossmer brings more than 30 years of experience within the district, having served as a teacher, coach, site administrator, Assistant Superintendent, and currently as Deputy Superintendent.
In addition to his educational leadership, Brossmer served eight years on the Downey City Council, including a term as mayor in 2012.
Brossmer has played a key role in launching academic innovations, overseeing strategic planning efforts, and managing major bond-funded facility improvements throughout the district. In 2024, he was named California’s Secondary Administrator of the Year in recognition of his student-first approach and collaborative leadership style.
His appointment is expected to be finalized at the next regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting on May 13.
Brossmer will replace Dr. John Garcia, who previously announced his retirement after 12 years as superintendent.
