Kiwanis groups add $250K for YMCA
DOWNEY – Downey Los Amigos Kiwanis and the Downey Kiwanis Foundation have each pledged an additional $125,000 toward construction of the new Kolar Family YMCA, bringing their combined commitment to $750,000.
The additional pledges were approved last month and build upon the $250,000 commitments previously made by each organization toward the project.
The expanded support comes as construction continues on the new Kolar Family YMCA campus in Downey, which is being built on the site of the former YMCA facility that was recently demolished.
The new facility is expected to serve thousands of local residents with expanded recreational, wellness and youth programming opportunities.
Plans for the campus include a modern aquatic center, gymnasium, fitness and wellness areas, childcare spaces and community gathering areas.
Leaders from both Kiwanis organizations said the increased investment reflects their longstanding commitment to supporting children, families and community programs in Downey.
Downey Los Amigos Kiwanis has supported numerous local youth initiatives, scholarships and nonprofit organizations over the years, while the Downey Kiwanis Foundation has played a major role in charitable giving and community improvement projects throughout the city.
The new YMCA is named in honor of the Kolar family, longtime supporters of the YMCA and the Downey community.
The new Kolar Family YMCA is expected to open in the spring of 2027.
