Record 449 Downey students recognized as AP scholars
DOWNEY — Downey Unified School District announced that a combined 449 students from its two comprehensive high schools, Downey High School and Warren High School, have earned the prestigious designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their outstanding performance on the May 2025 Advanced Placement (AP) exams.
This marks a record achievement for the district, highlighting the academic excellence and dedication of its students.
“These results show the incredible drive of our students and the strength of our AP programs across the district,” said Dr. Roger Brossmer, Downey Unified’s Superintendent. “We are so proud of their achievements and know that their commitment to academic excellence will carry them far beyond high school.”
The College Board’s AP Program provides students the opportunity to take rigorous, college-level courses while still in high school. Students who achieve qualifying scores on AP Exams may earn college credit, advanced placement, or both, giving them a strong advantage as they pursue higher education. Of the more than 1.8 million high school students worldwide who participated in the AP Program this year, only about 14 percent earned recognition as AP Scholars.
“This is an incredible achievement for our Downey Vikings,” said Tom Houts, Principal of Downey High School. “Not only does this recognition reflect the dedication and talent of our students, but it also highlights the tireless support of our teachers, staff, and families who encourage academic excellence every step of the way.”
At Downey High School, 258 students were honored as AP Scholars, the largest number in the school’s history:
81 students earned the AP Scholar with Distinction Award.
50 students earned the AP Scholar with Honor Award.
127 students earned the AP Scholar Award.
This year’s honorees included 122 juniors and 5 sophomores, many of whom will have additional opportunities to achieve recognition before graduation.
At Warren High School, 191 students earned AP Scholar recognition:
36 students earned the AP Scholar with Distinction Award.
33 students earned the AP Scholar with Honor Award.
121 students earned the AP Scholar Award.
Additionally, five students received the AP Capstone Diploma and two students earned the AP Seminar and Research Certificate.
“At Warren High School, we are extremely proud of our Bears who challenged themselves with college-level coursework and achieved such remarkable results,” said Warren High’s Principal, Dr. Cari White. “These awards are a testament to our students’ commitment, our teachers’ expertise, and the supportive community that makes success possible.”
