WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Robert Garcia (D-CA) has been selected by House Democrats to serve as Ranking Member of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, making him the panel’s lead Democratic voice as it conducts investigations and monitors the activities of the federal government.
Garcia, who represents California’s 42nd Congressional District and previously served as mayor of Long Beach, has been a member of the Oversight Committee since first being elected to Congress in 2023.
The House Oversight Committee is considered the main investigative body in the U.S. House of Representatives. It holds broad authority to examine nearly any aspect of the federal government, including executive branch agencies, federal programs, and the actions of public officials. The committee’s role is to ensure transparency and accountability across government operations.
In a statement, Garcia expressed gratitude to his colleagues for the appointment and outlined his priorities in the new role.
“From my time as Mayor of Long Beach to the halls of Congress, I have always worked to fight for the people,” Garcia said. “I am honored to have been chosen by my colleagues to serve as Ranking Member and lead Democrat on the House Oversight Committee. We will hold Donald Trump and his Administration accountable for their corruption and abuses of power, and will work to make our government more efficient and effective for the American people. Now let’s get to work.”
As Ranking Member, Garcia will play a key role in shaping Democratic strategy and responses to Republican-led investigations. He will also help guide oversight efforts related to government spending, administration policies, and national security issues.
Garcia’s appointment comes at a time of heightened partisan scrutiny on Capitol Hill, with the Oversight Committee often at the center of high-profile inquiries.
