William Craig, a familiar face around Downey, dies unexpectedly
DOWNEY — William Craig, a city Public Works employee whose work and friendships made him a familiar face throughout Downey, has died at age 47.
His death was announced Sunday. No cause of death was announced.
Craig was often seen picking up trash downtown and working at Downey’s parks and public facilities. Tributes from friends, colleagues and community leaders remembered a man with a big heart who loved his city and formed friendships wherever he went.
Mayor Claudia M. Frometa said her family had known Craig for about 23 years, dating to their time at First Baptist Church of Downey.
“Our community loved William because of his big heart and tender nature,” Frometa wrote on social media. “He was helpful, kind and protective of those he cared about.”
Frometa recalled inviting Craig to ride with her in the Christmas Caravan during her second mayoral term in 2023. She also remembered his habit of sending birthday and holiday greetings, including a text on Halloween.
Public Works employee Shane Ellison described Craig as one of his best friends, someone he had met more than 26 years ago and remained close to ever since.
“William had a huge heart and loved everything about the City of Downey,” Ellison wrote. “He walked around like he was a celebrity and that’s because he was, everyone knew him.”
Their friendship extended well beyond work. Craig spent Christmas with Ellison and his family, and Ellison said relatives would ask him to put Craig on speakerphone so they could say hello. When family members visited Downey, seeing Craig was part of the visit.
“He made relationships with everyone and you couldn’t help but love him,” Ellison wrote.
Craig’s community ties included Downey Ponytail, which remembered him as an honorary board member who had been part of its board for more than 20 years.
“William was not only a big part of our community, but he was family,” the organization wrote in a tribute. “William your huge heart, dedication, and friendship will always be remembered.”
Away from work, Craig was a frequent theme park visitor who enjoyed spending his days at Universal Studios Hollywood and Knott’s Berry Farm.
“The city of Downey will never be the same without you,” Ellison wrote.
