Doty, Stauffer honored by chamber

DOWNEY - Retired superintendent Dr. Wendy Doty and philanthropist Dr. Mary Stauffer were honored with humanitarian awards last month by the Downey Chamber of Commerce.Doty and Stauffer each received the Don and Julie Knabe Humanitarian Award on June 27, which "recognizes an individual or couple whose humanitarian contributions to our local community exemplify the principles of kindness and charity while displaying a passion for life and a sincere desire to work toward enhancing the lives of others." L.A. County Supervisor Don Knabe and his wife, Julie, the namesakes of the awards, were in attendance to present the awards. The ceremony was held at the Rio Hondo Event Center, with each table representing one of the six pillars of Character Counts: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. "Both women have made tremendous contributions to the education of local students," the chamber said in a statement. "Our thanks go out to the Downey High School Choral Ensemble, Marilyn Ashley, Yvette Abich Garcia, Mario Guerra, Martha Sodetani, Donald LaPlante, Greg Waskul, Sandy Huntsman, Julie Knabe and Master of Ceremonies Don Knabe for their participation. "Hearty congratulations are extended to both Dr. Doty and Dr. Stauffer from the Downey Chamber of Commerce board of directors and staff."
