Bell Gardens student arrest for bringing gun to campus

BELL GARDENS — A student who allegedly brought a handgun to Bell Gardens High School was arrested Wednesday, prompting a lockdown and search of the campus, but no injuries were reported.

According to the Bell Gardens Police Department, officers were notified around 9:30 a.m. about a report of a possible student with a gun at the campus at 6119 Agra St.

"BGPD officers were immediately dispatched and arrived at BGHS within minutes, where they detained and arrested a student who was in possession of a handgun," police said in a statement. "Officers confirmed there was no active shooter situation, no shots had been fired on campus and no students or staff were injured.

"This is an isolated incident and there are no further known threats to the school or our community."

The school was placed on lockdown as police swept the campus. The police activity prompted dozens of parents to flock to the school, and many were seen gathered on the streets surrounding the campus, awaiting word on the students inside.

Around midday, the students were released from campus.

No details about the arrested student were released. Video from the scene showed police taking a male student into custody and placing him into a police cruiser.

The name of the detained student was not released due to his age.
